When We See Charlatans As Experts

Body LanguageWe’re all infected with the Charlatans as Experts syndrome.

OK, so maybe that’s a bit harsh. Perhaps it’s really not that harsh in light of the insidious nature of this mental mistake.

Maybe, like me, you shake your head watching the inanity as random thoughts and never to be proven theories become “expert advice” for the naive and /or unquestioning public.  All I can do is think, “What the he$$….”

I often wonder why smart people can be so easily brainwashed by these charlatans… on social media (in the digital divide) or in person. What is it that drives intelligent humans to believe a stranger, without questioning their experience or their recommendations?  Simply because they say it’s so?

Seems to me we’ve all been programmed to follow this behavior.

  • As kids we’re trained to respect and follow our leaders.  Or at least my generation was trained that way.  We follow that programming throughout our lives  in so many little ways.  We don’t question mom or dad, the teacher who tells us something is accurate (whether it’s opinion or fact), the cop who directs us to a new route, the boss who wants it done his or her way.
  • In the past decade we’ve been strongly programmed to fear “the evil” that exists out there,  whether it be in evil terrorists or in our own degrading economic situations. Regardless of our party or faith, geographic residence or age range, we’ve been powerfully programmed to believe we’re in danger.

So we seek guidance from those who know more (maybe), those who can make life easier for us, those who offer us seemingly easy answers.

A quick look at our political contenders, corporate leaders and sports figures as role models shows us how far we’ll reach to find someone, anyone, who will be our savior… our expert.

Or you can just scroll through social media.

The Bottom Line

In a world where a sociopath can be your new best friend out on the digital divide, do you really want to be so easily trusting?

When charlatans regularly hide behind avatars, do you really want to so easily believe?

When we all know that corporate campaign donations determine the direction of pretty much any candidate for any party, do we really want to so easily follow that leadership?

I think it’s time we looked to ourselves for the answers, stepping into our rightful place as the architects and experts of our lives.  Seeing the reality of what’s around us, hearing the bullshi! in our world and speaking up to stand for what’s right and true.  For ourselves and for those who matter to us.
